NEIL SIMON’S ‘RUMORS’ – The Play, at the Holly Theater

NEIL SIMON’S ‘RUMORS’ – The Play, 1/13-15,20-22,27-29. Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2pm.

Imagine, that there is a party where several couples have gathered at a posh suburban home celebrating their hosts’ 10th anniversary and several things are wrong, very wrong, including the hostess is missing and the host (the deputy mayor of New York) has been shot in the earlobe.

That’s where this classic farce starts and where it leads is a hysterical story of people trying to conceal details from local police and the media as stories crisscross and rumors build.

Playwright Neil Simon is most well-known for plays such as Odd Couple, Biloxi Blues, The Out of Towners, Good-bye Girl and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and has been a Kennedy Center Honoree, has won four Tony Awards, six writer’s Guild of America Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.

Opening on January 13th, Rumors will run three weeks with an exciting cast of players, many of which you have not seen on the Holly’s stage before. Directed by Daniel Martin, the play pulls from many of our local residents including Andy Ward, Melanie Pruitt, Josh Cagle, Charity Cagle, Stephanie Neuman, Richard Pace, Gordon Solumbk and coming to our stage for the first time, John Minnich.

Tickets: $15.00, Contact the Holly Theater at 706-864-3759 for more info or to order tickets.

Hemlockfest 11/4-6 Musical Line Up Announced

For the seventh annual HemlockFest, the Lumpkin Coalition has again assembled an array of the area’s most awesome talents. Headliners for this year’s event—which returns to Starbridge Sanctuary near Dahlonega this November 4th, 5th and 6th—include Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Pharaoh Gummitt, Saint Francis, and the Lefty Williams Band.

Sunday’s line-up will be highlighted by Steel String Session and their brand of cosmic blues rockabilly bluegrass.

Dahlonega’s own prized talents will abound this year, with Home Grown Revival, Emerald Rose, and the Pick & Bow Band returning as crowd favorites. Carly Gibson, a singer/songwriter prodigy from Lumpkin County who completed programs at the prestigious GRAMMY Camp in Los Angeles, will be a new local addition.

This year’s bill includes other first-time HemlockFest performers, including Caroline Aiken, often cited as one of the cornerstones of the Decatur folk movement; and The Reese Boyd Project, which is fronted by a 10-year-old prodigy guitarist. Insonnia, Mean Mary, BlueBilly Grit, and 710 South will also make their HemlockFest debuts. More returning HemlockFest performers include Veronika Jackson, Women of Heart, and Barry Bailey. Unifire Theatre will appear once again with their stunning fire arts show.

HemlockFest is an unparalleled musical experience in a peaceful and beautiful setting just outside of Dahlonega. This all-ages, eco-friendly event features three days of live music, primitive camping, educational exhibits, arts and crafts vendors, a kid’s nature village, rustic living demonstrations, great food, and free canoeing. Both day and weekend passes will be available, and admission is free for kids (ages 15 and under with a supervising adult ticket holder).

HemlockFest proceeds aid efforts to minimize the impact of the non-native hemlock woolly adelgid parasite, which is devastating the hemlock trees of North Georgia at an alarming rate. HemlockFest has affected the raising of more than $100,000 to support predator beetle rearing labs at area colleges and universities. This effort to introduce predator beetles, which feed on hemlock woolly adelgids and are a safe and effective biological control, may help to save our native forests and preserve our quality-of-life.

Visit the website at www.hemlockfest.org or call the Hemlock Hotline at (706) 867-5157 for more information about HemlockFest, the hemlock crisis, or to volunteer. The Lumpkin Coalition, sponsor of the festival, is a 100% volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization formed to facilitate projects that benefit North Georgia, Lumpkin County, its residents and visitors. The Lumpkin Coalition is dedicated to preserving quality of life for all those who share it. To this end, it supports the preservation of a clean and healthy environment, responsible living, and responsible growth.

Appalachian Jams Saturdays July 16th- Oct 8

Listeners and musicians alike are invited to enjoy the acoustic bluegrass and old-time string music at the 2011 Dahlonega Appalachian Jam, every Saturday, April 23 through October 8, 2011, 2-5 pm, on the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site downtown.

The July 16th host band, JED, is serious about mountain songs and mountain style. They are Edward Hunter on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar, and Joel Cordle on mandolin and guitar. The group’s mandolins, fiddles, banjos, guitars, soul-stirring songs tell a story; while their harmony singing rings from the mountains, valleys, caverns, and creeks of the South. Edward & Joel are two old-timers who can still whip the stuffings out of a bluegrass song and coax a tear from the heart of the sentimental listener.

Importance of Being Earnest at Holly Theater 6/23-26,30, 7/1,3

Come stay with us and enjoy The Importance of Being Earnest at the Holly Theater in downtown Dahlonega.

The Story: John Worthing lives a double life. While in London he is Ernest, the lively urban bachelor. While in the country with his ward Cecily, he is Jack, the serious morally minded suburban gentleman. The inscription in a forgotten cigarette case reveals Jack’s deceit to his close London friend Algernon who, while calling out his friend’s impropriety, admits to having his own nom to folie. Chaos ensues as Ernest proposes marriage to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, and Algernon pursues Ernest’s ward Cecily. Will this farce through London and the British countryside end in marriage and happiness? As we all struggle to come to grips with the serious issues facing our world today, there is no better way to spend an evening than reveling in the masterful wit of Wilde’s “iridescent filament of fantasy,” which is as comic and relevant today as it was at its premiere in 1895.

Shows are June 23, 24, 25, 26, 30 July 1 & 3 Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 8:00pm Sundays (Matinee) at 2:00pm. Call 706-864-3759 for tickets/information.

Summer Shorts Playing at the Holly Theater

Like This!

Back by Popular Demand — The Green Mountain Theatre Company returns to the Holly Theater with — “Summer Shorts”!

Show Times: August 19-21, August 26-28 & September 2-4 at 8:00 p.m.
Ticket Price: Adults $12.00 / Students & Seniors $10
Venue: Holly Theater — Lower Level

An evening of hilarious and poignant one-act plays including: “Variations on the Death Of Trotsky” by David Ives –”Words, Words, Words” by David Ives — “The Hangover” by Keith Traywick — “Death Knocks” by Woody Allen — “Sure Thing” by David Ives

A Sure Thing by David Ives: This fun and quirky play explores the encounter between Bill and Betty. Through a series of opportunities, of near misses, of abject failure, Bill tries to engage Betty´s attention. Each time that the possibility of romance crashes and burns, a bell rings softly and the pair start over and try again. The characters shift and fine tune themselves, accommodating different possibilities, even different selves.

Death Knocks by Woody Allen: Nat Ackerman, seeing himself on a final mission succeeds in buying time from the inevitability of death, challenges a personified death to a game of gin rummy.

Hangover by Keith Traywick (a local playwright):  This funny and awkward play provides window into the dysfunctional lives of Tammy, Bobo, Frank and June, as they find themselves in an uncomfortable predicament caused by uncontrollable lust, family loyalty and social convention.

The Death of Trotsky by David Ives: The play depicts the death of Leon Trotsky in varying ways. The play is divided into eight scenes or “variations,” which depict the last day of Trotsky’s life. True to its title, the play calls for Trotsky to die at the end of each scene, and then continues on from near where the last scene left off, usually progressing the story a bit further each time.

Words, Words, Words by David Ives: The play is about three intelligent monkeys who are put in a cage together under the experimenting eye of a never seen Dr. Rosenbaum, who has the hypothesis: “Three monkeys hitting keys at random on typewriters for an infinite amount of time will almost surely produce Hamlet” (a variation on the infinite monkey theorem).

Box Office & Business Office Hours are Monday – Friday 10 am – 4 pm. Box Office Opens One Hour Prior to Curtain or call
706-864-3759 for tickets.
