Six Gap Century Bike Ride 9/25/2011

23rd Annual Six Gap Century is coming soon and is a favorite among many of our guests.

Coming on September 25, 2011 and taking place in Georgia’s Premier Cycling Venue, the Six Gap Century & Three
Gap Fifty boasts many of the same roads and mountain climbs as the elite Tour de Georgia.

The Six Gap Century’s ultra challenging route takes you up and down six of the steepest climbs in the North
Georgia Mountains. Riders test their stamina with more than 11,200 feet of vertical climbing over the 104 mile course. Elevations for the six gaps in this ride range from 1,400 feet to 3,460 feet. The toughest climb, Hogpen Gap, will test even the strongest riders, averaging a 7% grade for seven miles, with sections as steep as 15%.

The Three Gap Fifty’s alternative route offers half the gaps and half the distance, but is nevertheless a demanding and challenging course at 58 miles. Elevations range from 1,400 feet to 3,364 feet.

There will also be the 4th Annual “Valley Route” Bike Ride. This 35-mile valley option is a great introduction to the infamous Six Gap Century and boasts some of the most scenic mountainside in the Southeast. This new route will cast a special spotlight onto Yahoola Valley, Turner’s Corner, and R-Ranch in the Mountains.

Hemlockfest 11/4-6 Musical Line Up Announced

For the seventh annual HemlockFest, the Lumpkin Coalition has again assembled an array of the area’s most awesome talents. Headliners for this year’s event—which returns to Starbridge Sanctuary near Dahlonega this November 4th, 5th and 6th—include Colonel Bruce Hampton and the Pharaoh Gummitt, Saint Francis, and the Lefty Williams Band.

Sunday’s line-up will be highlighted by Steel String Session and their brand of cosmic blues rockabilly bluegrass.

Dahlonega’s own prized talents will abound this year, with Home Grown Revival, Emerald Rose, and the Pick & Bow Band returning as crowd favorites. Carly Gibson, a singer/songwriter prodigy from Lumpkin County who completed programs at the prestigious GRAMMY Camp in Los Angeles, will be a new local addition.

This year’s bill includes other first-time HemlockFest performers, including Caroline Aiken, often cited as one of the cornerstones of the Decatur folk movement; and The Reese Boyd Project, which is fronted by a 10-year-old prodigy guitarist. Insonnia, Mean Mary, BlueBilly Grit, and 710 South will also make their HemlockFest debuts. More returning HemlockFest performers include Veronika Jackson, Women of Heart, and Barry Bailey. Unifire Theatre will appear once again with their stunning fire arts show.

HemlockFest is an unparalleled musical experience in a peaceful and beautiful setting just outside of Dahlonega. This all-ages, eco-friendly event features three days of live music, primitive camping, educational exhibits, arts and crafts vendors, a kid’s nature village, rustic living demonstrations, great food, and free canoeing. Both day and weekend passes will be available, and admission is free for kids (ages 15 and under with a supervising adult ticket holder).

HemlockFest proceeds aid efforts to minimize the impact of the non-native hemlock woolly adelgid parasite, which is devastating the hemlock trees of North Georgia at an alarming rate. HemlockFest has affected the raising of more than $100,000 to support predator beetle rearing labs at area colleges and universities. This effort to introduce predator beetles, which feed on hemlock woolly adelgids and are a safe and effective biological control, may help to save our native forests and preserve our quality-of-life.

Visit the website at www.hemlockfest.org or call the Hemlock Hotline at (706) 867-5157 for more information about HemlockFest, the hemlock crisis, or to volunteer. The Lumpkin Coalition, sponsor of the festival, is a 100% volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization formed to facilitate projects that benefit North Georgia, Lumpkin County, its residents and visitors. The Lumpkin Coalition is dedicated to preserving quality of life for all those who share it. To this end, it supports the preservation of a clean and healthy environment, responsible living, and responsible growth.

Staying Cool in the North Georgia Mountains

Summertime heat is definitely here! We have travelled south to Atlanta several times in the last month and have noticed the difference in temperature between the Atlanta metro area and the North Georgia mountains. In Atlanta the heat from all the asphalt and buildings makes the temperatures feel much hotter. The lack of hard surfaces and buildings along with the woods usually make the mountains 8-10 degrees cooler.

Why not enjoy the cooler North Georgia mountain air this summer and visit Cedar House Inn?

Many guests visiting the inn during the warmer months have discovered several ways to make the visit even cooler.

One favorite is Dick’s Creek swimming hole that we discovered when we first moved to the Dahlonega area about ten years ago. A favorite among the locals the creek has numerous waterfalls and swimming holes of mountain cooled water. Bring some old towels from home and enjoy a cool swim in a mountain stream. We can show you how to get there when you check in. To see a video of the creek that we shot last year visit our videos page.

Another great option for staying cool is to take a kayak, canoe or tubing ride down the Chestatee River. The river is located on the way into town. Appalachian outfitters  will rent you the equipment and shuttle you back to your car. Bring some old towels to dry off. For a video about floating down the Chestatee River visit our videos page.

If you come and stay with us for more than one night you may want to take a day trip to Tallulah Gorge State Park which is about an hour east of Dahlonega. If you get there early you can get a permit to wade in the river at the bottom of the gorge. Take some old towels to dry off. We really enjoy hiking down the gorge since it reminds us of Colorado in terms of appearance. Watch the video on our videos page.

Don’t let the summer heat keep you at home sitting in your air-conditioned house. Visit us and stay cool.

Appalachian Jams Saturdays July 16th- Oct 8

Listeners and musicians alike are invited to enjoy the acoustic bluegrass and old-time string music at the 2011 Dahlonega Appalachian Jam, every Saturday, April 23 through October 8, 2011, 2-5 pm, on the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site downtown.

The July 16th host band, JED, is serious about mountain songs and mountain style. They are Edward Hunter on fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and guitar, and Joel Cordle on mandolin and guitar. The group’s mandolins, fiddles, banjos, guitars, soul-stirring songs tell a story; while their harmony singing rings from the mountains, valleys, caverns, and creeks of the South. Edward & Joel are two old-timers who can still whip the stuffings out of a bluegrass song and coax a tear from the heart of the sentimental listener.

Importance of Being Earnest at Holly Theater 6/23-26,30, 7/1,3

Come stay with us and enjoy The Importance of Being Earnest at the Holly Theater in downtown Dahlonega.

The Story: John Worthing lives a double life. While in London he is Ernest, the lively urban bachelor. While in the country with his ward Cecily, he is Jack, the serious morally minded suburban gentleman. The inscription in a forgotten cigarette case reveals Jack’s deceit to his close London friend Algernon who, while calling out his friend’s impropriety, admits to having his own nom to folie. Chaos ensues as Ernest proposes marriage to Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen, and Algernon pursues Ernest’s ward Cecily. Will this farce through London and the British countryside end in marriage and happiness? As we all struggle to come to grips with the serious issues facing our world today, there is no better way to spend an evening than reveling in the masterful wit of Wilde’s “iridescent filament of fantasy,” which is as comic and relevant today as it was at its premiere in 1895.

Shows are June 23, 24, 25, 26, 30 July 1 & 3 Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 8:00pm Sundays (Matinee) at 2:00pm. Call 706-864-3759 for tickets/information.
