Grand Opening – Byron Herbert Reece Farm & Heritage Center

Byron Herbert Reece, “Georgia’s Appalachian Poet/Novelist” spent most of the forty plus years of his life, laboring as a subsistence farmer on his family’s homestead.  His love of literature and gift for writing led to the publication of four volumes of poetry and two novels, all of which received national critical acclaim.  The Farm and Heritage Center seek to acknowledge and honor both his literary legacy and his life in Southern Appalachia.  The Byron Herbert Reece Farm and Heritage Center is located one mile north of Vogel State Park on U.S. Highway 129 and south of the town of Blairsville.

The Grand Opening is scheduled for Sunday, June 3rd, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.   Those who visit the venue on this day will have free admission and will be the first to explore the farm and heritage center, learning about “Hub” Reece and his life as a farmer in the mountains of North Georgia.

Visitors to the site will find a Welcome Center with a gift shop and museum area; a Poetry Trail that highlights Reece poems representing the four seasons, inscribed on stone boulders;  Mulberry Hall, the poet’s writing studio;  five barn buildings housing 13 exhibits which feature home and farm artifacts, implements, and enterprises that portray life in Appalachia during the first half of the 20th century; and  the Reece Gallery & Theater, located in the loft of the main barn, which will display photographs, books, copies of Reece’s writings, and other Reece material, along with the showing on a large screen TV of the award-winning video, “Voices … Finding Byron Herbert Reece.”  In addition, visitors to the site stroll down a scenic walking trail along beautiful Wolf Creek.

At the Welcome Center, there will be brochures available that will guide visitors through a tour of the various exhibits.  Docent-led tours will be available by reservation to large groups, such as school children and tour busses for a fee.  A family of five may enter for a fee of $15.00, with additional members of the family paying the amount applicable to his/her age.  Current members of the Reece Society will be admitted without charge.  This opening represents many years of dedication and hard work by the Byron Herbert Reece Society. The newly constructed Pavilion will be available for family reunions, weddings, and other events, for a fee.

The Farm & Heritage Center will be 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursdays through Saturdays and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays.  For further information, contact the Reece Society at reecesociety@gmail.com, or visit the Society’s website at www.byronherbertreecesociety.org.

NEIL SIMON’S ‘RUMORS’ – The Play, at the Holly Theater

NEIL SIMON’S ‘RUMORS’ – The Play, 1/13-15,20-22,27-29. Fridays & Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 2pm.

Imagine, that there is a party where several couples have gathered at a posh suburban home celebrating their hosts’ 10th anniversary and several things are wrong, very wrong, including the hostess is missing and the host (the deputy mayor of New York) has been shot in the earlobe.

That’s where this classic farce starts and where it leads is a hysterical story of people trying to conceal details from local police and the media as stories crisscross and rumors build.

Playwright Neil Simon is most well-known for plays such as Odd Couple, Biloxi Blues, The Out of Towners, Good-bye Girl and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers and has been a Kennedy Center Honoree, has won four Tony Awards, six writer’s Guild of America Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize.

Opening on January 13th, Rumors will run three weeks with an exciting cast of players, many of which you have not seen on the Holly’s stage before. Directed by Daniel Martin, the play pulls from many of our local residents including Andy Ward, Melanie Pruitt, Josh Cagle, Charity Cagle, Stephanie Neuman, Richard Pace, Gordon Solumbk and coming to our stage for the first time, John Minnich.

Tickets: $15.00, Contact the Holly Theater at 706-864-3759 for more info or to order tickets.

A Tuna Christmas Playing at the Holly Theater 12/2-18

December 2,3,4,9,10,11, 16, 17, and 18Friday and Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm
A Tuna Christmas is the second in a series of comedic plays (preceded by Greater Tuna and followed by Red, White and Tuna and Tuna Does Vegas), each set the fictional town of Tuna, Texas, the “third-smallest” town in the state. The trilogy was written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard. The plays are at once an affectionate comment on small-town, Southern life and attitudes but also a withering satire of same. The plays are notable in that two men play the entire cast of over twenty eccentric characters of both genders and various ages. The first play, Greater Tuna, debuted in 1981 in Austin; A Tuna Christmas debuted in 1989.

Wine in A Jug

We recently had guests share a jug of wine from Three Sisters Winery that was very good. Like a growler for beer this was wine in a jug. Please note the information below from the winery that explains this new way of purchasing wine.

Introducing GEORGIA JUG! Perfect for sharing with friends and family, this wine is something special we have dreamed up for the fall and holiday season.  If you enjoy Fat Boy Red or Blood Mountain Red, we think you’ll love GEORGIA JUG. It is an off dry Cabernet-Merlot-Pinot blend with rich color and flavor, perfect for sipping fireside with good friends and your favorite snack food. Or if you just have a hankering for that jug of wine and a deck of cards. GEORGIA JUG is a Mighty Fine Table Wine!

Each GEORGIA JUG purchase includes four limited edition sipping sized glasses while supplies last. And to increase the fun, you personally fill the handsome old-time 3 liter jug from the barrel and then stamp the label with a Face Jug design and apply it to the bottle! But the best part? GEORGIA JUG is “earth friendly and eco-green.” Simply bring the jug back for a refill at a discounted price.
